Zodiac Signs Simply Explained: Understanding Sagittarius Personality Traits

A zodiac wheel zoomed in on the sagittarius sign

The Sagittarius glyph is the bow drawn with a single arrow, while Gemini can be seen as a quiver of arrows. One purpose of Sagittarius is to find a single life philosophy and pursue activities aligned with that belief system. It has a single target and must hit it squarely. To do so, though, it can branch off into other areas, so long as they all point toward the final goal. In fact, they usually must branch off but at the same time coordinate all the diverse branches back to the trunk of the tree, which is their life philosophy. They must see the whole picture and connect the dots. In medical astrology, it is likely that Sagittarius rules the central nervous system and the spinal nerves – the parts of the nervous system to which the other parts answer (e.g., the afferent nerves, the autonomic system). In career, they make great producers and directors, motivational speakers, advertisers, salespersons on a large scale and professors, making the team work well and connecting people with ideas or products.

Sagittarius is also the centaur – half man, half beast. They must exercise their physical bodies, minds, and spirits to fulfill their purpose in this lifetime. Thus, their life philosophy has to somehow encompass or allow for all of these things. As Max Heindel pointed out in “Message of the Stars”, there are two major types of Sagittarians, the more beastly and the more human. While both can be quite companionable and likeable, the latter is prone to addiction, wild behavior, and dissolute activity, while the former is philosophic, high minded, generous, and sociable.

With these symbols in mind, we can see how some personality traits common to Sagittarians make more sense. Sagittarians love having freedom to move and think as they will – restrictions in these areas tend to be resisted and often simply hurdled over in some way. As Judith Hill says in her prize-winning book, Vocational Astrology, Sagittarius people are great at seeing the whole picture and coordinating diverse people or things to get in place to make an empty canvas into a beautiful picture. Using this ability to see all of the parts and how to put them together, they can often see into the future and have the ability to use their intuition and luck to make successful projections This is one of Sagittarius’s super powers. They are the proverbial seer according to the ancients, with incredible abilities to foresee the future or make successful future projections. Considering all of these talents, Sagittarians make excellent philosophers, cheer leaders, students (lifelong learner) and they are also great teachers, athletes, sharp shooters, promoters and advertisers, explorers and adventurers, producers and directors (usually with Aquarius planets), motivational speakers and coaches, sales people, managers of import and export businesses, travelers, and risk takers or managers of risk (if they do enough risk taking themselves ☺).  These roles are vocational in nature, but can be understood broadly to prescribe general traits that apply to the Sagittarius personality as it shines forth in their role in life or how others perceive of them.

Personally, Sagittarius is a kind and friendly sign, with a love of connecting with others and telling stories and usually partying as well. They are social and enjoy communicating ideas to lots of other people. Great travelers, adventurers, and philosophers, Sagittarians enjoy learning about other cultures and often integrating those ideas or ideals into their lives. This makes them wonderful at bridging the gap between people when in social and work situations. Usually, generous and magnanimous, Sagittarians are often popular in a group and as a friend or companion. And in that role, they can sometimes be wild, enjoying all night parties, and imbibing intoxicants. Physically, they are usually into athletics and skilled at them, but when negative can engage in extreme sports that risk their lives. These extremes are appropriate representations of the juxtaposition between the man head and horse bottom of Sagittarius. When they can control their beastly urges, and direct that powerful energy towards actions to help mankind, we see highly evolved Sagittarians as great leaders, thinkers and motivators in history like Winston Churchhill, Andrea Ghez, and Pope Francis.
